Trauma Informed Care
Learn to recognise trauma and stress responses in children, understand what happens in the brain and body, and know what actually helps a child feel safer, regulate and recover.

Understand what's behind the behaviour,
and know how to respond.
A child explodes over something small. Another shuts down completely. One cannot sit still. One keeps everyone happy and never asks for anything.
It is easy to focus on the behaviour you can see. Trauma-informed care helps you look one layer deeper: what might be happening underneath it?
In this training in trauma-informed care, you learn how trauma and prolonged stress can affect a child's brain, body, emotions and behaviour - and, more importantly, what you can actually do to help.
You practise how to recognise stress responses, support regulation, build safety and trust, and respond when a child shares something difficult.
Because understanding trauma matters. Knowing how to respond matters even more.

Content
Understand trauma & behaviour
You learn what trauma actually is, what it is not, and how common childhood adversity is in the group you already work with. You learn the difference between stress, chronic stress and trauma, what a child needs in order to feel safely attached, and what changes when that child has learned that adults are unpredictable.
Know what actually helps
You learn what happens in a child's brain and body under threat, and why a frightened child cannot learn, cannot think clearly and often cannot explain itself. You learn how safety, connection and co-regulation can help a stressed child settle. We practise practical tools using movement, breathing, sensory input, language, predictability and choice — and discuss when talking helps and when it doesn't.
From understanding to doing
Trauma-informed care also affects how you talk, collaborate and look after yourself.
You practise difficult conversations with children, parents and colleagues, learn how to explain stress in simple language and think about your own boundaries, stress and recovery. So you can actually use what you've learned in your everyday work.

The impact you make with your training
Train for change
Impact in South African Communities
South Africa
The Ripple Effect
In many of the communities we work in, there is almost no professional mental health support. What there is, is people who already stand in front of those children every day. The teacher. The rugby coach. The youth worker.
For every training somebody books with us, we give one to a professional or a role model in one of those communities, through Train for Change International. Adapted to their practice, and where we can, together with local trainers.
So your training lands in two places at once. One taken, one given.

Got questions?
Find your answers here, or send us a message, always happy to think along!
Who exactly is this for?
Any youth professional at bachelor's or master's level (HBO/WO) who works with or for children and young people. Like youth and family professionals, youth care workers, child protection and youth probation workers, orthopedagogues and pedagogues, child and adolescent psychologists, behavioural scientists, and social workers in youth care and more. Whether you're just starting out or have years of experience, you're welcome.
Why bachelor's or master's level?
Because that is what SKJ requires for accreditation, and we want your hours to count. If your diploma says something else but your practical experience is at that level, ask us. We look at what you actually do in your work.
How do I sign up, and what happens next?
You book your place on this page, or you can send us an email and we help you sign up. You get a confirmation straight away, with the dates, the times and the Zoom link. Two weeks before we start you get the preparation handouts and the workbook.
Do I need to know anything about trauma beforehand?
No. We build it up from the ground, in plain language. And if you already know a lot, you will still get plenty out of it, because this training is about applying it to your own work.
How big is the group?
Maximum twelve. Small enough that your question gets answered, big enough for a real mix of disciplines.
Can we do this with our whole team?
Yes. We build the training around the group your team works with: children, young people or adults. On location we work mainly with teams in the Netherlands and South Africa, other countries on request. Online we train teams anywhere. Ask us for a quote.
Can my employer pay for it?
Usually, yes. Most organisations have a training budget for this. We send an invoice with everything a finance department needs on it.
What if the training doesn't go ahead?
If we do not reach the minimum number of participants you get your money back, or you move to another date.
Is this therapy, or a treatment training?
Neither. You learn to recognise what is going on and respond well in your daily work. You do not learn to diagnose or treat trauma. If that is what you need, tell us and we will help you find the right place.
How long is it, and what is the study load?
Twenty contact hours across five modules. Around twenty hours of class in total. Online that is five sessions of four hours, one module per session. Plus any time that you use to prepare yourself.
Is the training accredited?
SKJ and NIP/FGzPt are in application, and we publish the points here as soon as they are awarded. You always receive an official certificate, which counts towards re-registration and professional development.
What language is the training in?
This training is available in English and Dutch. Tell us which you need when you book.
Can I bring a colleague?
Yes, and you both get 10% off. We would recommend it. What you learn sticks better when somebody at work has the same knowhow.
What does it cost, and can I pay in instalments?
€795 for the online training, including the workbook and all materials. Ukomelela is listed in the CRKBO register, so that is the final amount. No VAT is added. In-company is quoted per team. Need a payment plan? Say so when you book and we will set it up.
What if I have to cancel?
Let us know as soon as you can. What you get back depends on how close to the training we are, see our terms & conditions. You can usually pass your place to a colleague or move to a later date.
Is this training suitable if I have been through something difficult myself?
It can be, and for many people it has been. But not at every moment in your life. The subject is direct. Book a call and we will talk it through before you book anything.
