This is the journey you keep

Some things can’t be learned from a classroom alone. You have to experience them. A regular training can give you plenty of knowledge — but knowledge on its own doesn’t always change what you do on Monday. Real change happens when knowledge meets experience, reflection, and other people.
So over one week we bring together the things that rarely come together: science-based training built for daily practice, learning with local professionals, cultural exchange, and genuine social impact. Mornings you learn. Afternoons you watch it come to life. And all week you’re learning with people who do the same work in a completely different world.
That’s why we don’t run a training that happens to be somewhere beautiful. The place is part of how you learn. And you don’t come home with only a bag full of tools — you come home looking at children, at your work, and at yourself, a little differently.
We don’t simplify the science. We translate it. And we don’t tell people what to think — we create the conditions in which new insight can emerge.
You know the feeling.
There's more going on here.
f you work with children, you know the moment: behaviour that doesn’t quite add up, and a sense that there’s more going on than what you can see.
Most of us were never really taught this. trauma, child sexual abuse — they came up briefly in our training, if at all. And yet, on average, nearly every classroom holds at least one or more children who have lived through one of them. Many carry it in silence for years. Which leaves one hard question:
Would I recognise it, if that child were sitting across from me?
This week gives you the knowledge, the skills and the confidence to meet that moment — going genuinely deep, learning to act with cultural sensitivity, and to meet the different needs of different children.
Our approach
Why a learning experience
works
Psychology you don't just learn.
You feel it.
You do it.
You live it.
1 LEARN
Each morning is a deep training on your theme — grounded in psychology and years of practice,. You don’t just learn the material for yourself; you learn how to pass it on — to give clear, practical psycho-education to the children, parents and colleagues around you. The point isn’t leaving with a full notebook. It’s doing things differently the next day. and helping others do the same.
2 Experience
We understand something far better once we’ve seen and done it. So afternoons take theory out of the room and into real local projects — you don’t watch from the side, you take part. And connection reaches far beyond talking: through sport, music, dance, creativity and nature, resilience is built in ways you can bring straight back to your own work.
3 Connect
Every international participant learns alongside a local professional, as equals — a dutch psychologist next to a youth worker from Zanzibar, a teacher next to a social worker. Everyone brings their own discipline, culture and experience. So you don’t only learn the material — you see how others read the very same child, and you start to notice and challenge your own assumptions.
4 Impact
Impact here works in three ways — a real ripple effect. For every international participant, a local professional joins the training free through Train for Change International so the knowledge stays in their community. The afternoon workshops are run by local organisations already building children’s resilience — you learn from them, and your visit supports their work. And what you learn reaches the children you work with, and — through the professionals who trained beside you — the children they work with too.
5 Integrate
Learning only lasts if it comes home with you. All week there’s room to reflect, compare cases across disciplines, and work out how you’ll actually use this — so you leave with a personal plan and concrete next steps, not just notes. And you don’t leave alone: afterwards you stay part of the Ukommunity, our international community of professionals who keep learning, asking and thinking together.
What a day with
looks like
Mornings teach you. Afternoons change you. Evenings connect you. And all week long, you give back — and see a place through new eyes.
Rise
REFLECT
Each day opens with a walk, often along the beach or in the mountains. Starting slowly, in nature, matters: gentle movement and open air help you settle, reflect and a settled mind takes in new ideas more easily.
Morning
LEARN
A few hours of deep training on your theme, alongside local professionals — practical, science-based, full of cases, and built around what you actually meet in your work. Where the science becomes something you can use on Monday.
Afternoon
DO
Then you’re out with a local organisation, seeing — and joining — how they build children’s resilience. One afternoon it’s surf or rugby with local kids; the next, a dance class, music or singing, yoga or acrobatics, or a creative workshop. You take part, and you feel why it works.
Evening
Connect
Good food, honest conversation, and the slow unpacking of the day with people from other disciplines and countries. The kind of evenings where a group of colleagues becomes an international network you keep long after.
Impact - all week
You learn, a community grows with you
Running underneath it all: local professionals join your mornings for free, the role models you learn from are supported by your visit, and the children in their care feel it.

What you’ll
Learn
Two themes. About the topics you meet most, and were prepared for least.
Each journey is built around one of our themes, so the learning goes deep. Pick the journey with the theme you meet most in your work.
Trauma-informed work
You’ll come to understand what trauma really is, how the brain and body respond to stress, and why a child’s most confusing behaviour often makes complete sense once you see what’s behind it. You’ll learn to look behind the behaviour, not just at it — to create safety, build trust, and help a child regulate. You’ll leave calmer and surer in exactly the moments that used to feel hard.

Child Sexual abuse
The knowledge most of us were never given, and need most: how to recognise the signs, how to hold a disclosure with care, what to say and what not to say, when and how to report, how to involve parents and colleagues, and how to help build safer places for children. Difficult material — handled with the care it deserves.

More topics on the way
To learn abroad
We’ll soon be running impactful learning trips around our other themes (grief & loss in children, and inclusion & diversity) too. Want to be the first to hear when you can learn about grief & loss or inclusion & diversity in an inspiring destination? Leave your email.
Why fly all the way there for a
training?
It’s a fair question — and honestly, it’s the heart of what we do. If all you want is knowledge, there are excellent trainings closer to home, and we’d genuinely point you to them.
But knowledge alone rarely changes how we act. What changes us is experience meeting people who see the world differently, and the space to step back from the daily rush and really look — at the children we work with, at our own habits, at ourselves.
A week away makes that possible. Learning beside professionals who do this work in a completely different context stretches your thinking, your cultural sensitivity, and your sense of what’s possible. The theory stops being abstract, because every afternoon you see it — in the way a local organisation helps a child through sport, music or play. And because your place funds a free place for a local professional, your growth is never only your own.
Some lessons only land when you don’t just learn them — you live them. That’s why we build it this way.
Where you'll
go
Inspiring places where you’ll have the most unique experiences — and where we’ve built a strong long-term network of local partners. Because those relationships are what make the experience genuine. Pick your place and your theme.
Cape Town,
South Africa
Ocean on one side, Table Mountain on the other, and communities who know a great deal about resilience. Mornings of hiking and learning. Afternoons of surfing, rugby, yoga, and more workshops with local role models in communities and creative spaces you’d never reach as a visitor.

Zanzibar,
Tanzania
There’s something special about Zanzibar. A bounty island of turquoise water — but it’s the life on it that stays with you: warm communities, and a resilience you can feel. Mornings you learn alongside local role models; afternoons you learn from inspiring local projects — beach yoga or kickboxing, drumming, dance, and time on the water.

Or somewhere made for your team
Teams - on request
Do you work in a(ny) team that works with or or children? We can build a learning experience abroad just for your group. You pick the destination and the theme: trauma, sexual abuse, grief, or inclusion & diversity — or another topic your team keeps running into. Honestly, it’s one of our favourite things to do: take a whole team somewhere new, and watch them come back closer, braver, and better at the work that matters most.
Tailor-made journeys for teams & companies
This is what
experiencing looks like
The afternoons are where it gets real. You don’t see a country from behind glass — you step into it. You get to know a place the way a tourist never does: through the people who live there, who show you their neighbourhoods and how they build resilience in their own communities. Here are some examples from our Cape Town workshops.
The confidence to act when a child needs you
To recognise the signals, open the hard conversation, respond safely to a disclosure, and make a child feel genuinely seen, heard and safe.
Practical tools for everyday moments
The words & Not just the big conversations — ways to build trust and safety that fit your own work.
A new way of seeing & acting
You’ll look behind behaviour, notice your own assumptions, and discover there’s more than one way to support a child.
A wider world
An international network of peers, and a broader view of children, your profession, yourself — and why you chose this work in the first place.
Double impact
The
Ripple Effect
Here’s the part we’re proudest of. The local professionals who join your mornings train for free — because you booked a place. The role models who lead your afternoons keep doing real work in places where mental-health support barely reaches, and your spot helps pay for it, through Train for Change. So you come home with more, a community on the other side of the world grows stronger, and the children they care for feel it most of all.
That’s not a nice side effect. It’s the whole reason we do this.
Hear it from Sinazo: what your visit makes possible.
Why travel
with ukomelela
You could book a training. You could book a trip abroad. We could never find one that did both — really both — so we built it ourselves. Here’s what makes it ours.
You learn by doing, in community
You’ll be on your feet, in real situations, figuring it out with a small group of peers and local professionals — and, honestly, having a really good time. Turns out that’s also exactly when things stick.
Built by
psychologists
Our team of developmental psychologists didn’t end up specialising in trauma and abuse by accident — they went toward the topics most people avoid. So the hard question you’ve been carrying for months? Here, it finally gets a real, grounded (in science) answer.
Your journey strengthens a community
Trauma and resilience don’t look the same everywhere, so you learn shoulder to shoulder with local professionals — their view cracks yours open in the best way. And your place funds a free one for them, through Train for Change. You both walk away better at this.
Is this
for you?
Who you’re with matters here — it’s half of why it works. So we’ll be honest about who these weeks are for.
See if you recognise yourself.
✓ This is for you if…
You work with children or young people in any role — whether you are a teacher, social worker, psychologist, coach, youth worker, paediatric nurse or doctor, policymaker, foster parent and more.
You don't want to look away from the hard topics — you want to support children as well as you can, even when it's difficult.
You want to genuinely understand children, especially when their behaviour is hard to read.
You believe you're never done learning, and that growing as a person and as a professional go together.
You're curious about other cultures and other ways of working, and open to looking honestly at your own.
You believe learning sticks best when you do it, and do it with others.
You love that your learning experience also opens a place for someone else — and leaves something behind in the communities you visit.
✕ This isn't for you if…
You're after a quick certificate with no real depth.
You're not currently working with or for children.
Travelling abroad really isn't your thing.
You're after knowledge only, and would rather stay in a classroom close to home.
You'd prefer to stay inside your comfort zone, and aren't looking to be gently challenged.

Grief & loss and inclusion & diversity run as regular trainings but might become available as a learning experience abroad in the future, or on a custom trip for your organisation.
You can — and if it's purely knowledge you're after, we can point you to our own training offer for that. And we work on a simple principle — take one, give one — so your place funds a free one for a local professional. Your growth reaches further than only you.
