You are not alone

in this.

Whether you work as a teacher, psychologist, child coach, social worker, nurse, foster parent, police officer, or policymaker — if children or young people are part of your work, you know it:

A child tells you something heavy. A teenager shuts down and you don’t know why. A parent walks in carrying grief. You notice signs of abuse, exclusion, or distress — and the response you were taught doesn’t quite fit the moment.

Those are the moments most trainings don’t prepare you for.

You improvise. Or freeze. Or take it home with you for nights afterwards.

It’s not that you’re not capable. It’s that no one ever taught you how to meet these moments — with the right words, the right next step, and without losing yourself in the process.

That’s where we come in.

Why this

matters

Children don’t always tell you in words. They tell you in behaviour, in silence, in the way they stop trusting school or themselves. When the adults around them can meet the hard stuff with skill, a child’s whole story can change. When they can’t, the child gets less support, less safety, less of the response they deserved — and you burn out faster than the work asks of you.

The good news: this is learnable.

The reality in

numbers

6/10 children
globally

carry at least one major adverse childhood experience.

1 child in every
classroom

will lose a close family member before they finish school.

86% of child
sexual abuse

goes unreported by the child, and does not get support.

Most of this never reaches your desk in words. Children don’t always have the language, the trust, or the protected moment to say it out loud. That’s where you come in.

With the right skills, the right language, and the right tools, you become the adult who can recognise, respond, and create safety — even when the child can’t tell you yet.

Imagine the difference you can make.

Why work

with us

Three reasons people working with children choose Ukomelela — again and again.

01

Built by psychologists who've actually done this work

We’re developmental psychologists who’ve spent years working with children, schools, and families. What we teach isn’t drawn from a textbook — it’s drawn from the rooms we’ve sat in. So when we show you what to do in the hardest moment, it’s because we’ve been there too.

02

You learn by doing not just by listening

We don’t believe in trainings you forget by Friday. Our approach rests on four pillars: UNDERSTAND the science. MOVE with it. MIRROR what you see in others. CONNECT with real people in real community. By the time you leave, the tools aren’t just in your notes — they’re in your hands.

03

Your growth multiplies through double impact

Every spot you take supports a free one for a local professional working with children in an under-resourced community — through our non-profit partner Train for Change. So while you grow, someone else is growing too. And the children in their care? They feel it.

Where you'll feel at

home

Here's the kind of professionals who keep finding their way back to us.

How to

start

Whatever fits your team best — pick your path and we'll meet you there

01

Find your starting point

Choose from four formats: trainings, tools, learning experiences abroad, or the upcoming Online Academy. Each one is built for a different need.

02

Not sure where to start?

Book a free 30-minute intro call. No pitch. We listen to where you are, what you’re carrying, and what you need.

03

Show up. Practise. Take it home.

One-day workshop, or 8-day journey, or a self-paced course — you’ll learn by doing, and walk away with something you can use the next morning.

04

Keep growing

After your programme, you stay in our community. Peer connection, follow-up resources, and continued conversations around what matters most.

Every training you join trains

another youth professional too.

We deeply believe in doing good — and we’re on a mission to close the gap to mental health knowledge and care, especially where it’s needed most. Around the world, professionals working with children are doing some of the most important work there is. But not all of them have access to the training that lets them do it well.

When you join one of our trainings, a youth professional in an under-resourced community gets a free seat at the same training — through our non-profit partner Train for Change. Same depth. Same tools. Same care. Doubled.

And there’s something wonderful about doing this together — that the same morning you’re learning to better support the children in your work, another professional somewhere else is learning right alongside you. Two professionals, one mission. That’s how we close the gap.

Everything you need to know

Anyone who works with or for children and young people in a professional capacity: teachers, school social workers, school psychologists, child coaches, youth workers, child protection professionals, school counsellors, daycare leads, foster care professionals, nurses, police officers, policymakers, and team leaders in any of these settings. If a child or teenager is part of your work or your decisions, our trainings are built for you.

Yes — we have accreditation pending with SKJ (Stichting Kwaliteitsregister Jeugd) for our core trainings. We'll happily apply with other professional registers on request. Your participation counts as official professional development hours.

Pick the format that fits your role, organisation, and pace:

  • Open enrolment — sign up individually for live trainings at our locations in the Netherlands.
  • In-company — youth organisations (schools, clinics, hospitals, municipalities) can request a training around one of our existing topics or a fully custom topic built around your team's needs.
  • Online Academy (coming soon) — learn in your own time and pace, around the topic you choose.

Abroad — through our impactful learning experiences in South Africa or Zanzibar, alongside other local and international professionals working with children. Also bookable as a team experience for your organisation.

Both Dutch and English. Open-enrolment trainings in the Netherlands run primarily in Dutch. Our impactful learning experiences abroad and most South Africa-based work run in English. In-company trainings are available in either language — your choice. In the online academy we will have courses available in English and Dutch.

Yes. After completing one of our trainings, you'll receive a certificate of participation. For accredited trainings (SKJ pending), the certificate also confirms your professional development hours.

Costs depend on the format. Open-enrolment trainings have fixed per-day pricing. In-company programmes are quoted per project, tailored to your team's needs and budget. Impactful learning experiences abroad include training, accommodation, food and local activities — pricing varies by destination and duration. Book a free intro call and we'll send you a tailored proposal. We try to keep it affordable for everyone, so we can make a difference together for the children we care for!

That's exactly what the free intro call is for. 30 minutes, no pitch — just a real conversation about where you are and what you need. We'll point you toward the right starting point, even if that turns out to be free resources rather than a paid programme.

Ready to feel prepared for the hard stuff?

Book a free 30-minute intro call. We’ll listen, understand where you are, and point you to the right starting point — training, tools, or a learning experience abroad.
