Our philosophy
The ukomelela experience
Knowledge matters. But on its own, knowledge rarely changes people. Most of us have left an inspiring training or a beautiful trip and slipped back into old habits within a week.
We spent years, as psychologists, looking at why. And the research points somewhere consistent: people change when knowledge is experienced, reflected on, shared with others, and slowly worked into daily life. Learning doesn’t only happen in a classroom — it happens in relationships, in nature, in conversation, in movement.
So that is what we build. You expand your knowledge in the morning, experience it in the afternoon, make sense of it in the evening, and carry small, deliberate steps home with you. Every walk, session and conversation is there for a reason — because meaningful growth deserves that kind of care.
We don’t simplify the science. We translate it. And we don’t tell people what to think — we create the conditions in which new insight can emerge.

Our approach
Why this way of learning
works
Psychology you don't just learn.
You feel it.
You do it.
You live it.
This isn’t a nice idea about travel. It’s built on what research shows actually changes people — and we turned that into five principles. Whichever journey you choose, all five principles finally come together in a way a hat changes how you live and work.
1 LEARN
Every journey begins with understanding — knowledge grounded in research, put into plain language. We help you understand not only what happens, but also why. When something makes sense, you can work with it.
2 Experience
We learn most deeply by doing. Research consistently shows information sticks when it’s paired with action, emotion and reflection. So we never stop at theory: you move, practise, try things, feel them — which is exactly when the learning lands.
3 Connect
Growth rarely happens alone; it happens in relationships. Across the week you connect — with yourself, the others travelling with you, nature, and the local communities who welcome you in. Some of the most valuable learning happens when people with different stories meet with curiosity.
4 Impact
Travel can leave more than memories behind. Wherever we can, we work with local organisations and role models — not as a side activity, but as part of the learning. There’s good evidence that contributing to something beyond yourself supports your own wellbeing. So you don’t only receive here. You give back, too.
5 Integrate
The real value of a journey shows up long after it ends. Each day makes space to pause, reflect, and turn insight into everyday life — so you leave with practical tools, new habits and clear next steps, not just inspiration. Lasting change is built from small, deliberate steps.
A day, the
way.
Mornings teach you. Afternoons change you. Evenings connect you. And all week long, you give back — and see a place through new eyes.
Rise
Each day opens with a walk, often along the beach or in the mountains. We start slowly, and in nature, on purpose: gentle movement and open space help the nervous system settle.
Morning
A few hours on the topic your trip is built around — real psychology and science, translated into plain language, with time to reflect.
Afternoon
You experience what you learned — through movement, creativity, or sport. run wherever possible by local professionals.
Evening
Good food, easy laughter, and the slow unpacking of everything the day stirred up. The conversations go deeper than you expected.
Impact
The people you spend time with do real work in their own communities, and your visit supports it. You get to know the country the way a tourist never does.
This is what
experiencing looks like
The afternoons are where it gets real. You don’t see a country from behind glass — you step into it. You get to know a place the way a tourist never does: through the people who live there, who show you their neighbourhoods and how they build resilience in their own communities. Here are some examples from our Cape Town workshops.
RUGBY
Movement, teamwork, and a whole lot of joy, with a local club.
Dance
Where the body says what words can’t,
with local artists.
Community
Seeing Cape Town through the eyes of the people who call it home.
Find your
experience
Whether you’re growing for yourself, for your work with children, or as a team — there’s a journey built around you.
Practical, science-based formats for the topics most of us tend to avoid — built to help you navigate them with skill and care.
FOR YOUTH PROFESSIONALS
You work with or for children, and you want to get better at the hardest topics — alongside professionals from another part of the world.
Impactful Learning Experiences
A learning journey for professionals who work with or for children. The mornings are for learning around your picked topic – on trauma-sensitive practice, or child sexual abuse-, and you learn side by side with local professionals, as equals: a real exchange, both ways. Afternoons show you how local organisations help stengthen children through play, sport and creativity. You come home with things you can use the next day — and because a local colleague trains free alongside you, what you learn keeps reaching children here, too.

For teams & organisations
You want your team to return more connected, and better at the important things that quietly decide how you work together.
Impactful Team Experiences
Tailor-made experiences that combine real learning with real doing. We start with your team’s wishes and goals, then come back with a concrete proposal — destination, training and workshops built around your team.
Each journey we build around your team, starts from one honest question: what do you actually want to be different when you’re back? What follows is a science-backed transfomative week designed by psychologist, that will help your team overcome the toughest challenges in any inspiring location.

FOR YOURSELF
You want to understand yourself more clearly and look after your mental wellbeing — with the time and space real reflection needs.
Mental Wellbeing Retreats
Eight days to understand yourself a little better — and to look after your own mental health, which most of us put off for years. Each morning, a psychologist walks you through something you actually run into: why you react the way you do under stress, where a pattern comes from, what that knot in your stomach is trying to tell you. Afternoons you put it into practice with your group of like-minded people— movement, sports, the sea, creativity., nature. Evenings you reflect and connect. You come home with a suitcase fulll of experiences and tools that will help you in your day to day life.

these journeys are for
Who
Three different experiences, each with its own goal. But whether you come for your professional growth or your personal growth, the people and teams who choose an impactful experience with us tend to have a few things in common.
You take yourself and the people around you seriously.
Looking after yourself, and them, isn’t soft, it’s a strenght — it’s what lets you show up the way you want to, at work and at home.
You'd rather face the hard stuff than avoid them.
The difficult conversations, the heavy emotions, the situations most people would rather avoid — you want to know what’s actually going on and what helps when they land in front of you.
You learn by doing, not just listening, in community
Think about what’s really changed you. It probably wasn’t a lecture — it was something you did, usually with other people around you.
You like the idea that your growth helps someone else too.
It feels good when something you do for yourself also helps the community where you go — and here, it really does.
Where we
go
Places chosen for their beauty and the strength of the communities we work with there. We only run journeys in places where we’ve built real, long-term relationships with local organisations — because it’s the people you meet there, and the work they do, that make these trips what they are. For teams, we’ll build your journey anywhere.
Cape Town,
South Africa
he Mother City — often called one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The nature, the mountains, the ocean — but above all the people make it a place that settles into your heart. Mornings where you learn; afternoons of surf, rugby, dance and community work with local role models.
Our signature destination
Zanzibar,
Tanzania
A calmer, smaller island setting where nature, community and reflection come to the front. Our local network here opens doors to genuine encounters — the kind you couldn’t arrange as a visitor. Mornings of beachwalks and learning. Afternoons of beachside yoga & kickboxing, and more community projects with local guides.

Teams - on request
For any team, an experience can go anywhere — a week close to home, or further afield. Tell us your goals, what you want to learn and experience and we’ll come back with a proposal: where to go, what to train on, and what to do in the afternoons.
Tailor-made journeys for teams & companies
Double impact
The
Ripple Effect
Every experience you join directly strengthens a local community. The role models who lead your afternoons are doing real work where mental-health support is scarce — and your booking helps fund it, through our non-profit partner Train for Change.
You grow. They grow. That’s the whole idea.
Hear it from Bongeka: what your visit makes possible.
For us, impact isn’t an add-on to the week — it’s part of how the learning works. Most of our afternoon workshops are run with local organisations who work every day on the mental health and resilience of children and young people. You meet the people behind that work, hear their stories, and see how much is possible with very little.
There’s a reason we build it this way. Research consistently shows that contributing to something larger than ourselves — and feeling genuinely connected to others — supports our own wellbeing and sense of meaning. So the question a Ukomelela Experience asks isn’t only “what can I learn here?” but also “how can my being here support something bigger than me?”
There’s an African proverb: it takes a village to raise a child. We believe it takes a village to support an adult, too.
Why travel
with ukomelela
Plenty of trainings out there. Plenty of trips, too.
Here’s the unique package you get with us, that neither gives you.
You learn by doing, in community
We don’t believe in theory you forget by Friday. Mornings you understand it afternoons you do it, in a group where you see yourself clearly, among people and local role models who become community.
The learning lives in your body, not just your notes.
Built by
psychologists
Every experience is designed and held by our team of developmental psychologists who specialise in the hard topics. You’re not getting a travel host with a workbook — you’re getting real and science-backed expertise, translated into something you can actually use.
Your journey strengthens a community
Every experience supports local professionals and role models through Train for Change. So while you grow, a community grows too — your spot helps pay for theirs.
More than a destination
What happens when you step out of your daily life, and give yourself the time to really reflect? Often, that’s where change begins. Away from your inbox and your routine, things get quieter, and you notice more. Being somewhere new, among people who live very differently, has a way of shaking loose assumptions you didn’t know you had.

The philosophy is the same; the design differs by who it's for. Impactful Learning Experiences are for youth professionals who want to grow in their work. Impactful Team Experiences are tailor-made for teams and organisations. Mental Wellbeing Retreats are for individuals doing their own inner work. Pick the one that fits where you are — each links to its own page with full detail.
A reflective morning walk, then a morning session on the day's theme — training or psycho-education and group work led by psychologists. Afternoons are for doing (often with local organisations)— movement like surf, yoga or hiking, music or nature. Evenings are for connection — shared meals and honest conversation. The shape stays the same; the place and the people change.
Right now in Cape Town (South Africa) and Zanzibar (Tanzania), with more destinations opening carefully. Our learning experiences and wellbeing retreats run in these fixed destinations. Team experiences are different: Cape Town is our signature trip, Zanzibar and Rio are established options, and beyond that we'll build a team experience anywhere — a week at home, in Europe, or further away. Dates live on each journey's page.
Our experiences abroad run primarily in English, with bilingual (Dutch/English) support where needed. Tell us what you need and we'll make it work.
Pricing varies by experience, destination and duration, and generally includes training, activities, accommodation, food, and the double-impact contribution to Train for Change. Each experience page has the detail — or book a free intro call and we'll walk you through it. Payment plans are possible; we want money to be a conversation, not a barrier.
Wherever we can, local professionals and organisations are part of the week — and, on our professional and individual journeys, your participation helps fund a place for a local professional too, through our non-profit partner Train for Change. You learn; a community grows alongside you.
That's exactly what a free, no-pressure intro call is for. Just a real conversation about what you're looking for. If an experience isn't the right fit, we'll point you somewhere better. You can always pop us an email with your questions as well.
Curious where this could take you?
We build every experience around what you actually need. Tell us what you’re looking for — for yourself, your team, or your work — and we’ll figure out the right fit together. No pressure, no pitch.
