When you don't do them alone. Some things shift
A pattern in your relationships you can see — and still can’t quite change. A reaction that fires before you can think. That moment when someone you love is going through it, and you don’t know what to say. The feelings you can’t quite reach, even after years of books, journals, and late-night conversations with yourself.
It’s not that something’s wrong with you. Most of us were never taught this. We weren’t given the words. We weren’t given the space. No one showed us how to feel, how to support, how to carry what life puts in our way.
So we keep bumping into the same things. And we keep carrying them mostly alone.
That’s what we’re here for.
We help you find the words. We help you feel again — in your body, not just your head. We help you feel held by people who actually get it. And we do the things research shows really work: psycho-education, real practice, movement, time outside, being together.
We also believe — really believe — that this work sits beautifully alongside making impact in the world. That when growth becomes shared, and shared growth makes ripples beyond your own life, thàt’s where we actually get happy.
Your growth becomes
someone else's growth too.
We deeply believe in doing good — and we’re on a mission to close the gap to mental health knowledge and care, where it’s needed most.
Inner work shouldn’t be a luxury reserved for those who can afford it. And growth feels different when it’s shared.
When you join a retreat or any paid Ukomelela programme, a local rolemodel working with children in an under-resourced community gets free training through our non-profit partner Train for Change. So while you do the work on yourself, you’re also impacting the work of someone whose growth touches a whole community of kids.
Your healing becomes their healing too. And there’s something wonderful about doing your own inner work knowing it ripples — quietly, gently — far beyond your own life.
Why this
matters
When you understand what you carry, you don’t just feel different — you start showing up differently. For yourself. For the people you love. For your work. For your relationships. And when you can’t yet understand it, the cost shows up everywhere: in burnout, in disconnection, in the patterns you swore you’d break, in the relationships that don’t quite land.
The good news: this is learnable.
The skills, the language, the space to understand yourself and what you carry — they can be built.
The reality in numbers
1 IN 2 ADULTS
experiences loneliness on a regular basis.
→ That's the gap we built this to meet.
THE #1 PREDICTOR OF HAPPINESS
isn't money, fame, or genes — it's the quality of our relationships.
→ That's why our work happens in community.
120 MINUTES IN NATURE A WEEK
is the threshold for measurable mental health benefits.
→ That's why we move — preferably outside.
Most of us were taught to carry it in silence. To “be strong.” To work it out alone — in therapy if we could afford it, in journals if we couldn’t, in our heads if neither worked.
That’s not how healing works.
Healing happens in community. With the right knowledge, the right people, and the right space to put it down — even just for a while — what feels impossible to carry alone becomes something you can hold, understand, and grow from.

Why work
with us?
Three reasons people doing the inner work choose Ukomelela — again and again.
01
Built by psychologists who've actually done this work
We’re licensed psychologists who’ve spent years working with adults navigating heavy things, and patterns they didn’t yet know they were repeating. What we teach isn’t theory from a textbook — it’s drawn from the rooms we’ve sat in, the conversations we’ve held, and the inner work we’ve done ourselves.
02
You learn by doing not just by listening
Inner work in isolation is hard. Inner work in community is different. Whatever you do with us — a retreat, a tool, a course, a podcast — it’s never just dry theory you read once. We translate the science into things you actually do, in conversations with others where you see yourself reflected, in community. The work stops being something you carry alone.
03
Your growth multiplies through double impact
Every training or retreat seat supports a free training spot for a local professional working with children in an under-resourced community — through our non-profit partner Train for Change. So while you grow, somewhere else, a community grows too. The inner work becomes outer impact.
Where you'll feel at home
Here's the kind of people who keep finding their way back to us.*
You..
want to actually break the patterns — not just notice them again.
You..
want to understand what you carry — and know what to do with it.
You..
're done doing the inner work alone — you want to do it with people who get it.
You..
believe in psycho-education + doing the work, not just reflecting on it.
You..
want growth that lives in your body and your relationships — not just in your journal.
You..
like the idea that your growth could ripple — into the people you love, and into communities that need it most.
We are not the right fit for you if you are in acute crisis or active suicidal ideation. We can point you to better support.
How to
start
Whatever fits where you are — pick your path and we'll meet you there.
01
Find your starting point
Choose: a retreat, our tools, free webinars and podcast, or our upcoming Online Academy. Each one meets a different moment in your work with yourself.
02
Not sure where to start?
Book a free 30-minute intro call. No pitch. We listen to where you are, what you’re carrying, and what you need — then point you toward the right starting point.
03
Show up. Practise. Carry it differently.
Whether it’s a 7-day retreat, a tool you download, a webinar, or a course you take at your own pace — you’ll learn by doing, and walk away with something you carry in your body, not just in your notes.
04
Keep growing — in the Ukommunity
After your programme, you stay in the Ukommunity — our private space for people doing the inner work alongside you. Peer connection, follow-up resources, and continued conversations around the topics that matter. (Ukommunity = Ukomelela + community.)

Everything you need to know
Adults (~27–45) doing the inner work — exploring trauma, grief, anxiety, patterns, healing, or self-development. You don't need a diagnosis, a label, or a story you can name yet. If you're carrying something and you want to understand it, work with it, and not have to do it alone — our retreats, tools and learning are built for you.
Our retreats are not a replacement for therapy. They're group therapy + psycho-education + embodied practice — held by psychologists, but in a group format and a retreat setting. Many of our participants are also in individual therapy — and tell us the retreat goes somewhere their therapy can't quite reach. If you're working with a therapist, we recommend you mention the retreat to them too.
Pick what fits where you are:
- The Real Wellbeing Retreat — 8-day retreats in Cape Town, Zanzibar, or Rio de Janeiro. Small groups (8–12). Full immersion.
- Tools — printable materials for self-use, available anytime.
- Free webinars and podcast — for learning at your own pace, between bigger moments.
- Online Academy (coming soon) — self-paced courses around the topic you choose.
Both Dutch and English. Our retreats abroad run primarily in English (with bilingual support where needed). Webinars and podcasts vary by topic and audience. Our tools are available in Dutch and English.
Retreats are intentionally small — usually 8 to 12 participants, held by at least 2 psychologists plus a local team. Most people come alone. The group becomes the community for the week, and many participants stay connected long after.
Retreats include training, group therapy, accommodation, food, local activities, and the double-impact contribution to Train for Change. Pricing varies by destination and duration. Payment plans are possible — we want money to be a real conversation, not a barrier. Get exact pricing by booking a free intro call or starting an application.
That's exactly what the free intro call is for. 30 minutes, no pitch — just a real conversation about where you are, what you're carrying, and what you need. If a retreat isn't the right fit, we'll be honest about that. Sometimes the right next step is one of our tools, our podcast, or your own therapist — and we'll say so.
