About us
Welcome to Ukomelela
Ukomelela means resilience.
Resilience sits at the heart of everything we do, make and organise. Because it is what carries you through the hard stuff.
The hard stuff is worth facing.
We know it can feel daunting. We also know how much it gives back, to you and to the people around you, when you do.
Built for you, wherever you stand.
We are a team of psychologists who specialise in the topics most people find hard to talk about. Whether you lead a team that wants a safe, healthy workplace, work with children who carry difficult experiences, or are here for yourself, we help you take the next step.
Heavy topics, but never heavy.
We make hard things understandable in clear, human language. We give you practical tools you can use straight away. And we create experiences that stay with you. Positive and resilience-focused, with a good dose of courage, colour and impact.

Why work with us
Here’s what working with us looks like
Psychology you don’t just learn.
You feel it. You do it. You live it.
We work with a team of psychologists who turn complex science into clear, human, usable tools. Whatever you are carrying, whatever you are working on, our approach rests on four pillars.
Understand
The topics we work with can be complex. Yet understanding them is what helps you notice what is going on and know what to do. In our trainings we translate science into language that is engaging and clear for everyone.
Experience
Doing, not only thinking. You practise with real situations, try out new words and feel what works, in your body as much as in your head. That is how knowledge turns into something you actually use the next day.
Mirror
Seeing yourself through others. Hard topics touch something personal. We make room to reflect on your own patterns, boundaries and reactions, because the better you know yourself, the better you can support someone else.
Connect
Real people, real community. You learn together with others who carry the same questions, here and in Southern Africa. And every programme gives a local professional free access to training, so the work keeps growing.
Testimonials
Real Stories
What our participants take back to their work, their teams, and themselves.
Practical, deep, and culturally sensitive. I felt prepared the very next day at work.
Education Specialist
This trip changed how I see my own work — and how I show up for the children I work with.
Study trip participant
Learning side by side with local professionals was the most valuable part. I came home with more questions, in the best way.
Nanda
Study trip participant
Mornings of deep learning, afternoons of doing — it’s a way of training I’d never experienced before.
Study trip participant
I expected to learn about trauma. I didn’t expect to feel this connected to a whole new community.
Study trip participant
Months later, I still use what I learned — in my work, in my conversations, in how I listen.

Everything you need to know
For three groups: youth professionals working with children and teens; teams and organisations that want safer, more honest workplaces; and individuals who want to understand themselves and others better. Whatever role you're in, the heart is the same — we help you handle hard things with more confidence.
Three things. One: everything we make is built by psychologists who specialise in the topics most people find too heavy to talk about. Two: we don't just teach theory — every training, tool and experience is designed to actually work the day after. Three: every programme you join also strengthens local professionals in under-resourced communities. You grow. They grow. The work multiplies.
Yes — we have accreditation pending with SKJ (Stichting Kwaliteitsregister Jeugd) and we'll happily apply with other professional registers on request. Your participation counts as official professional development.
What you learn with us has an impact straight away, on the people around you. Learn to work in a trauma-informed way, for example, and the children and young people you work with get better support.
On top of that, for every paid spot we donate a free training spot, through our non-profit partner Train for Change International, to a professional or role model in a community where mental health support is not a given. Joining with your whole team? Then we donate a training to a whole team. That way the children and young people they work with get better support too.
And when you travel with us, we always work with local non-profit organisations doing beautiful work for mental health. You learn from them, and your participation also supports their work, so they can keep doing it.
Most of our work is open to anyone who works with or cares about people. For our accredited trainings, some prior professional background is needed. For our in-company trainings, retreats and study trips, the only thing we ask is that you come open, curious, and ready to learn — with us, and with each other.
Yes. Most of our in-company trainings are tailored. We start with a free intro call to understand your team, your context and what you are running into. Then we shape the content, examples and exercises around that, so it fits your work from day one.
The impact you make
The Ripple Effect
Every programme you join directly strengthens local communities through our partnership with Train for Change.
This is what drives us, and we could not be prouder of the impact we make together.
