Mornings: training

You choose which training you want to follow: Trauma-Informed Care, or Child Sexual Abuse: Awareness, Action & Prevention. You train together with local role models. So you hear straight away how colleagues in a very different practice and setting deal with the same questions and challenges.

Afternoons: out and about

Off to special places across Rio. You join workshops with local organisations and role models, and see how they build resilience with children and young people: through football, surfing, jiu-jitsu, art, dance and music. And that same day, you work out what could work in your own classroom, group or practice.

Your accommodation is arranged

We arrange the whole week for you: from training and workshops to your accommodation and good meals. All you need to book is your flight. That makes it easy to add a holiday, and all your energy goes to what you came for.

The programme

What your Learning Experience in Rio looks like

Mornings you follow the training of your choice, with real cases and plenty of tips and tools you can use straight away. You fly in and we pick you up from the airport. Settle in, unpack, rest from the journey and get your bearings. Those who feel like it can join us for dinner. The programme starts the next morning.

See the day

MorningWe start by getting to know the city we're guests in. Together we head into Vidigal and up towards Dois Irmãos, seeing Rio from a very different angle and learning more about the neighbourhood along the way.

AfternoonThen we slow things down with a welcome picnic around Arpoador. Time to get to know the group properly, talk about what brought everyone here and watch your first Rio sunset together.

EveningDinner together for whoever wants to keep going.

See the day

MorningAn introduction to trauma, stress and resilience in children and young people. What stress can look like, why behaviour changes and what children may need from the adults around them.An introduction to child sexual abuse: what it is, the signals that may raise concern, and how to respond safely when something doesn't feel right.

AfternoonFootball with Fabio from Ink Projecto in his community. You see how something as familiar as sport can become a steady place for children to connect, practise teamwork, experience success and have adults who keep showing up. A very practical look at resilience outside the training room.

EveningThose who want to can experience a roda at Pedra do Sal: music, rhythm and another side of how people in Rio come together through community and culture.

See the day

MorningToday's training looks at what happens in the brain and body under stress: alarm systems, triggers, different stress responses and what helps a child feel safer again.Today's training looks at how abuse can happen and stay hidden: grooming, secrecy, disclosure and why warning signs can be difficult to recognise.

AfternoonThen you experience some of those ideas through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Attention to your body, another person's signals, boundaries, trust and staying regulated under pressure suddenly become very concrete when you're actually practising them.

LaterIf the day allows, we make time for the green side of Rio too, around Tijuca Forest and Vista Chinesa. A little room to come down after a very physical afternoon.

See the day

MorningHow relationships influence safety, regulation and resilience. We look at connection with children, working relationally and what helps people feel able to trust. What to say when a child tells you something, what not to ask, how to help them feel believed and safe, and what needs to happen next.

AfternoonIn the Brazilian dance workshop, connection becomes something you actually have to do. You pay attention to another person, communicate without many words, take up space and adjust to each other. A very different way of experiencing some of the things we discussed that morning.

EveningLater we visit a samba school. Beyond the performance, you see the community, teamwork and sense of belonging behind it, and how something creative can bring generations of people together.

See the day

MorningA shorter training session on self-care and professional boundaries, followed by yoga near the beach. Time to look at what this work asks of you, and what helps you keep doing it well.

AfternoonFree. Swim, sleep, walk, read, explore or do nothing at all. Practice what you preach. The afternoon is deliberately free, so you can actually practise taking care of yourself rather than only talking about it.

EveningJoin the group for dinner or keep the evening to yourself.

See the day

MorningPractical ways to help children regulate, create more safety and respond to behaviour without accidentally making stress bigger.Prevention in practice: boundaries, grooming, online safety and how to talk about these topics with children in clear, age-appropriate language.

AfternoonSurfing with Favela Surf Clube. In the water, regulation is not abstract: you have to manage frustration, try again after falling, trust the people around you and build confidence one small step at a time. You also learn how the coaches use surfing to create those experiences with young people.

OptionalFor those who want even more Rio, we can also include a hike to Pedra Bonita around this part of the week.

See the day

MorningThe final training module focuses on working with parents, colleagues and other professionals, and bringing everything from the week together into your own practice. What happens after a concern or disclosure: working with parents and colleagues, knowing your own role and keeping the child's safety at the centre.

AfternoonIn Santa Teresa, you join a creative workshop and learn from someone using art locally as a way for children and young people to express things that are not always easy to say out loud. You experience the method yourself and take away ideas you can adapt in your own work.

LaterThen we leave the classroom behind for one last Rio experience together: out towards the Cagarras Islands, followed by sunset from Morro da Urca. Time to look back at the week, talk about what you're taking home and close it properly as a group.

EveningCertificates, a closing dinner and one last evening together.

See the day

We say goodbye. You fly home, stay a little longer in Rio or continue travelling through Brazil.
