What it is

Your

not so typical retreat

You’ve read the books. Listened to the podcasts. And not much changed, because insight on its own rarely does.

Real change needs three things: understanding what’s going on, feeling it in a new experience, and practising it with other people. This week is built around all three.

We take you somewhere beautiful and give you space to work on yourself in a unique way you won’t find anywhere else. Our psychologists have designed honest, in-depth sessions around the themes most of us wrestle with: the patterns you keep repeating, the boundaries you find hard to hold, the fears that make more of your choices than you’d like, and how you really look after yourself. You don’t just understand yourself better, you start doing something about it. All of it based on what the science shows works.

In the afternoons you put it into practice, in workshops led by inspiring local role models. Because growth doesn’t happen in a (therapy) room alone. It happens in connection.

This is for you

There's more going on here.

On paper, you’re fine. A job. Good people around you. A life that holds together.

And still, a question that keeps coming back. Why do I keep doing the same thing? Why do I go over my own limits? Why do I look after everyone but me? Why can’t I switch off, even when nothing’s wrong?

You often already know what would be good for you. Knowing was never the problem.

This retreat is where you start doing something with it.

What a day with

looks like

Mornings teach you. Afternoons change you. Evenings connect you. And all week long, you give back — and see a place through new eyes.

Rise

REFLECT

The day starts with a walk, on the beach or up in the mountains. Moving your body in nature settles the mind and makes room for new thinking. You take one question with you, on the theme of the day.

Morning

LEARN

In the morning session we go into the theory: what psychology and neuroscience know about the day’s theme. Our psychologists make it clear, and then you apply it on your own life.

Afternoon

DO

Now you feel what you learned. You meet your patterns, your fears and your boundaries by stepping into them, through yoga, surfing, kickboxing, dance and more. Led by a local role model doing real work for children’s mental health.

Evening

Connect

Evenings are for connection. Good food, honest conversation, and time to let the day settle.

Our approach

Why this retreat actually

changes something

Psychology you don't just learn.

You feel it.

You do it.

You live it.

This isn’t a nice idea about travel. It’s built on what research shows actually changes people — and we turned that into what we call The Ukomelela Method. Every Ukomelela Experience rests on the same five principles. Here is how each one shows up in a retreat for you.
1 LEARN

Every morning you understand something about yourself you didn’t before. Our psychologists explain it clearly and simply, grounded in science. Because when you understand how you, your brain and your body work, only then can you really change anything. We teach you what genuinely works, and how to use it in your own favour.

We understand something far better once we’ve seen and done it. So what you learned in the morning, you practise in the afternoon. Through activities that get you moving, out in nature, led by inspiring local role models. It sticks when it moves through your body, not just your head.

We don’t grow, or heal, on our own. We need other people, and you learn as much from them as from any session. In your group, and through local role models who show you a kind of resilience you didn’t know existed.

Your week gives something back. Your place supports the local organisations we partner with, and it funds Train for Change International, our work bringing free training on mental health and hard, often unspoken topics to places where care is hard to reach. And giving back, it turns out, is good for you too.

Learning only lasts if it comes home with you. So you learn to weave what you understood and practised into your everyday life. You leave with a plan, and a group that stays in your corner, through our Ukommunity.

The topics

of your retreat

Each day works on a theme that catches up with all of us sooner or later. We go into the (neuro)psychology of it: how it works, why it’s often so hard to change, and how you actually can, so you go home lighter and clearer than you came.

Retreat Schedule Table

Why go all the way there to

work on yourself?

You can grow at home too. But some things an hour of therapy on the couch can’t give you: real psycho-education, all kinds of exercises alone and together, and above all, actually doing the work.

And you do it somewhere beautiful, where you properly come to rest and step out of your daily routine. No inbox, no roles, no one who already decided who you are. Just room to look.

And you don’t do it alone. You’re with a small group on the same road, and with local role models who show you what resilience can look like.

Where you’ll

go

Inspiring places where you’ll have the most unique experiences, and where we’ve built a strong long-term network of local partners. Because those relationships are what make the experience genuine. Pick your place.

Cape Town,

South Africa

The Mother City. Ocean on one side, mountains on the other, and communities who know a great deal about resilience. Mornings in nature and full of life’s lessons. Afternoons of yoga, surfing, creativity, music, dance and rugby, led by local role models.

our signature destination

Zanzibar,

Tanzania

There’s something special about Zanzibar. An island of turquoise water, and communities with a resilience you can feel. Mornings on the beach and filled with learning. Inspiring afternoons of yoga, kickboxing, creativity, music and dance, led by local role models.

On request

Some people would rather do this together with the people they know. A group of friends, a family, a circle who want to grow and reconnect at the same time. We can run the retreat as a private week, shaped around who you are and what you need. You pick the place. Looking for a (leadership) retreat with your team around a topic? That’s our Transformative Team Experiences.

What you’ll take

home

People tell us it was one of the most meaningful weeks they’ve given themselves. Not only for what they learned, but for the people they met, the impact they made, and the way it changed them as a person.

01

A real understanding of why you do what you do

How your brain and body work, and what that means for the patterns you keep repeating.

02

Practical tools that fit your own life

Not just big realisations. Concrete ways to set a boundary, calm yourself down, and be kinder to yourself.

03

A kinder, clearer way of seeing

Yourself, and the people around you, with more understanding and less judgement.

04

Calm, and a plan to protect it

Real recovery, and the difference between knowing you should slow down and actually doing it.

And a group who knows what you’re working on, long after the week ends.

Double impact

The

Ripple Effect

This is the part we’re proudest of. Almost every workshop is led by local role models and organisations doing real work for children’s mental health, often where support barely reaches. You learn from them, and your place helps fund their work, through Train for Change International.

Contributing to something bigger than yourself is one of the strongest sources of wellbeing there is. So you come home with more, and a community grows stronger with you.

Why a retreat

with Ukomelela?

There are plenty of retreats out there. Here’s what makes ours different.

You learn by doing, in community

Most retreats say “work on yourself”. We think you grow in relationship: with your group, with local role models, with the place you’re in. Mornings you understand. Afternoons you do it, with your whole body. That’s when it sticks.

Led by psychologists

The entire week, every session and every activity, is built by psychologists and based on what we know from science will improve your mental wellbeing. So the questions you’ve carried for years finally get a real answer.

Built to give back

Your week strengthens a local community, and that’s part of what makes it good for you.

Is this

for you?

We’d rather be honest with you than talk you into it. So here’s who this week is for, and when it might not be the right time.

✓ This is for you if…

You keep running into the same patterns, and you’d like to understand why.

You go over your own limits, and saying no doesn’t come easily.

You look after everyone else, and somewhere along the way forgot yourself.

On the outside everything looks fine, but inside there’s a different conversation.

You know what would be good for you. Doing it is the hard part.

You believe you’re never done growing, and you’d rather not do it alone.

You’re ready to actually do the work, not just read another book about it.

You like the idea that your week also supports a local community.

✕ This isn't for you if…

You’re in an acute crisis, or you’re having thoughts of harming yourself.

You’ve very recently been through something major and it’s still raw.

You’re in treatment this might clash with. Talk to your practitioner first.

You’re looking for therapy. This is built by psychologists and therapeutic in nature, but it isn’t therapy and doesn’t replace it.

People who came to grow

and what they took home

Most people come for a bit of clarity, or a bit of rest. They leave with more than they expected. Hear it from them.

Honestly, I almost didn’t book it. I’m so glad I did. I came back knowing myself better than I have in years, and my partner noticed before I even said anything.

Hannah

London, UK 🇬🇧

I’ve done therapy, I’ve read the books. This was the first time something actually clicked into place, because you’re not just talking about it, you’re doing it. The kickboxing afternoon undid me in the best way.

Sanne

Utrecht, Netherlands 🇳🇱

I didn’t expect to cry, and I didn’t expect to laugh that much either. The group became people I still text every week. And meeting the local coaches changed how I look at my own life.

Questions

Everything you need to know

Adults from all walks of life who want to invest in themselves: to understand their patterns, set healthier boundaries, feel more grounded, and grow in their relationships. People navigating anything from everyday struggles to bigger questions about their life. What they share isn’t a diagnosis or a crisis. It’s that they’re on a path of personal growth, and they’d rather not walk it alone. Our team are certified psychologists, so we can meet a wide range of people and needs. After you apply we do a short intake, to make sure the timing is right for you and the group is a good fit for everyone.

Each day centers on a theme most of us run into at some point: how your past shaped you, the patterns you keep repeating, your relationships and boundaries, looking after yourself, fear and courage, and living closer to your values. We go into the psychology and neuroscience behind each one: how it works, why it’s hard to change, and what actually helps. You won’t leave with vague inspiration. You’ll leave understanding yourself, with tools you can use.

No, and we want to be honest about that. The retreat is therapeutic in nature, built by psychologists and grounded in science, and the sessions go genuinely deep. But it isn’t official therapy and it doesn’t replace it. It’s psycho-education and exercises that can have a real, therapeutic effect around the themes we explore, in a guided group setting. If you’re looking for treatment, we’ll gladly help you think about what fits.

Not at all. This week is for anyone who wants to understand themselves better and grow. You don’t need a diagnosis, a crisis or a story. Curiosity about yourself is reason enough.

No. The afternoon activities are built for every level, from complete beginners to people who’ve done it before, and most groups are a mix. That’s part of what makes them good: you challenge and learn from each other. You always choose how far you go. And if you have an injury or a physical limitation, tell us at intake and we’ll adapt things so you can take part in your own way.

A morning walk on the beach or in the mountains with a reflective question on the day’s topic, a morning Deep Dive (a psychology session and time to work with it), followed by an active afternoon workshop with a local role model, and an evening for connection. Midway through, a slower day to rest. The full day-by-day is on each destination page.

You join a group of people on the same kind of journey, from different countries and walks of life, all working towards feeling more like themselves. It’s warm, open and surprisingly close. Plenty of people leave with friendships that outlast the week. And it doesn’t end when you fly home: you stay part of the Ukommunity, our wider community of people who keep growing, and keep in touch.

Currently Cape Town (March 2027) and Zanzibar (October 2026), with more on the way. Dates per destination are on the destination pages.

Small on purpose, 8 to 12 people, so everyone gets depth, safety and real attention.

English, with Dutch/English support where needed.

They sometimes do, and we’re ready for it at all times. Two psychologists travel with the group, taking part in activities is always a choice, and no one ever has to share; you will never be forced to speak about things you don’t want to. We work only with local people and organisations we trust, who will make you feel safe too.

Almost every workshop is run by local role models and organisations working with children and young people on growing their resilience. You learn from them, and your place helps fund their work, and supports Train for Change International, which brings free training on mental health and hard topics to places where care is hard to reach. Good for them, and good for you.

Pricing varies by destination and generally includes the programme, accommodation, breakfast, local activities, and your place in the Ripple Effect. Flights are usually separate, travel insurance is required. Dates and pricing are on each destination page.

Yes. We run private retreats separately for a group of friends, a family, or any close group who want to grow together. You pick the place. (For a work team developing around a theme, see our Transformative Team Experiences.)

No rush. If this is the kind of week you’ve been needing, apply, or book a short, free call and we’ll think it through with you.
